MHA #16 - Sunday Morning

After the events of yesterday evening and by the time they had been handwavily gotten medical treatment, it had been really late by the time that Cutter had taken Connor back to his apartment so that he could look after him since out of the two of them Cutter was in better shape - even with his slightly burnt hands and the occasional cough from the smoke inhalation.

Connor had a sprained ankle from when he had been pinned under the door, so Cutter had very carefully set him on the couch and elevated his ankle with pillows and had been putting ice on it to help with the swelling. He wasn’t feeling great from the smoke inhalation either so Cutter was keeping a close eye on him.

“I think I might end up ordering us breakfast,” he considered later that morning after they’d managed to get some sleep - Cutter said from the armchair that he had slept on to be near Connor, “probably would be a good idea to avoid using the stove and oven for a while,” he admitted, looking at his bandaged hands.

Even though it was a good idea in general for Cutter to avoid cooking.

"I'm just sitting, Nick" he said with a smile as he reached out a hand and carefully put it over one of Cutter's. "I'm fine. I'm not trying to get up and stand or anything. At least not yet."

Cutter held Connor’s hand gently, giving it a gentle squeeze, “you still need to be careful,” he said softly, “I …I thought I was going to lose you last night,” he admitted. He hadn’t slept much at all, he’d kept dreaming of Connor trapped in that closet - the building burning around them.

"I know Nick... I know" Connor said softly as he pulled Cutter closer and put his arm around him gently. "I'm sorry I put you through that..." he whispered as he kissed the top of Cutter's head. "But I'm alright. Im right here. You didn't lose me."

Cutter let Connor pull him in closer and he leaned against Connor softly, “it wasn’t your fault, you don’t have to apologise for anything,” he said gently, “It …I’ve never been more scared of anything, trying to get to you and all that fire…” he closed his eyes, “I love you,” he said softly.

"I shouldn't have gone back for the damn bag" Connor said simply as he held Cutter close, gently running his thumb over the bandaged hand in his. "I knew you would come back, Nick. I love you, so much" Connor said as he leaned his head against Cutter's just enjoying the feeling of him being right there beside him.

"I would have done the same thing," Cutter said gently, which was probably not as comforting as it sounded in his head, "and now I'm trying to figure out if I can leave out about us being trapped in a burning building in my next report to Lester - something tells me he might not be quite thrilled to find out about that,"

"Maybe downplay the nearly getting falmbe' bit" Connor said with a weak laugh, that immediately lead to a coughing fit that had him doubled over for a bit as he tried to catch his breath.

Cutter winced at that cough, giving Connor's back a gentle rub, "yeah that might not be a bad idea, I think the less that I tell Lester about Fandom the better he can pretend that there's nothing unusual about this place," he paused, "at least we didn't have to deal with giant worms this time?"

Connor leaned against Cutter and tried to stop the spasms. He gave a groan and shook his head. "Definitely no more giant worms, please. Getting nearly eaten once was more than enough, thank you very much."

Cutter kept rubbing Connor's back as he did, trying to soothe those spasms, "yeah I think I'll take a fire over giant worms ...I'm pretty sure I still have some of those suction marks on me when they tried to latch onto my skin,"

"Yeah...I can still feel that slime," Connor said with a shiver. "Good thing I had someone come and save me eh?" he said with a small smile at Cutter as he slowly stopped coughing.

"I know - I never thought I'd ever be hacking a giant worm with a samurai sword that's for sure," Cutter said as he returned that small smile and then he had to stop and take a moment to cough - turning slightly from Connor as he kept coughing for a bit, "but just another day in the office right?" and then his eyes started watering as he went off into a coughing fit.

Now it was Connor's turn to return the back rub and gentle pats. He watched Cutter for a moment then leaned over and grabbed one of the water bottles off the table and uncapped hit and handed it over.

"Hear you go Nick... easy there..." he said softly, a worried look spreading on his face.

"Thank you," Cutter managed to gasp out as he took the water bottle and managed to take a gulp of water to try and stop coughing, "I guess that's why they said to take it easy for a couple of days huh?" he managed once the coughing had subsided a bit.

"Well, the nurse did say it was essentially like getting a bad sunburn in the lungs. Everything is all raw and irritated and messed up" Connor said, wincing slightly at that vivid but likely very accurate analogy.

"Let me go grab us some more water" Connor said as he started to try and get up off the couch.

Cutter realised what Connor was doing and instantly held up a hand to stop him, "oh where do you think you're going?" he said gently, "I'll get us the water, you stay put and rest that ankle of yours okay?"

"It's just a sprained ankle, Nick... It's not broken or anything...." Connor sighed, knowing that look all too well. "Oh alright, fine" he said with a small huff as he settled back on the couch. "Bring some more ice for it while you are in there?"

"I'm on it," Cutter gave a small smile as he got up off the couch and made his way to the kitchen. He got them both more bottles of water and then he got an ice pack from the freezer, wrapping it up in a towel.

"Here you go," he said gently as he joined him back on the couch, "some ice as requested,"

"Thanks" Connor said as he took the pack and tried to get back into a decent position with his leg propped back up on the pillows. He got the icepack back in place and waited till Cutter sat back down on the couch. Then with a grin, Connor laid back, resting his head against Cutter's leg as he smiled up at him. "You make a very nice pillow yourself," he said with a smirk.

"Well I'm glad I can be good for something," Cutter smiled fondly at seeing Connor get comfortable, resting against his leg, he ran his hand through Connor's hair, giving it a gentle massage, "and it's better than you putting weight on that ankle of yours until the swelling goes down,"

"You're good for a lot of things Nick..." Connor started to say and then got cut off by the happy moan that escaped him at the head rubs. "Like that for example..." he said with a contented moan as he leaned into the touch a little more.

Cutter smiled warmly at that and he happily continued the head rubbing, pleased to see that Connor was enjoying it, "well you're in luck, there's plenty more where that came from," he grinned and then he bent down to give Connor a gentle kiss on the forehead as he massaged his head.

"No complains here..." Connor said happily as he felt himself relax even more and eve start to drift off a little. "Could let you do that all day...." he said with a small yawn.

"Well I might have to stop when our food and coffee arrives," Cutter smiled fondly at that yawn as he kept up the head rubs, since the food and coffee were probably due at any point then, "but we can always reheat them later," he told Connor, "if you're not up to eating just now,"

"You are a cruel man" Connor said with a playful smirk. "Making me choose between head rubs from you and food. That is just not fair!"

Connor reached up and ran a hand gently down Cutter's face and smiled.

"But as nice as this is, I think food is definitely in order" he said as he reluctantly started shifting to try and let Cutter up.

"I will give you all the head rubs later," Cutter promised as Connor started to shift so he could stand up.

It was at that moment there was a knock at the door, "well looks like that's our food," he smiled softly.

"Will hold ya to that" Connor said with a grin as he sat back up and watched Cutter head for the door.

It took a bit of manoeuvring but Cutter was eventually able to carry over the bags with the sandwiches and the box of pastries, before going back for the coffee - after he tipped the delivery person for the order, he came back over to the couch.

"Breakfast is served," he smiled warmly, "and you don't have to suffer through my cooking, so you're welcome," he added with a gentle laugh.

"Aye looks amazing, thank you" Connor said with a smile as they began unboxing everything. "And a smoke-free breakfast is just what the doctor ordered" he added with a grin as he leaned over and kissed Cutter's cheek.

“You’re welcome,” Cutter smiled happily, “yes, it would probably have been tempting fate if I’d tried to cook us breakfast,” he admitted sheepishly as he started to get everything set up on the coffee table, “I’ll get us some plates,” he went to the kitchen and came back with plates for both of them.

"Ok, you... sit... now" Connor said with a grin as he grabbed Cutter's hand when he came back and gently pulled him down onto the couch. "You are recovering too, remember?" he said as he took one of he plates and started loading it up.

And that was the moment Cutter ended up coughing a few times and he winced a bit, “yeah I guess I keep forgetting that huh?” he looked a bit sheepish as he tried to get comfortable on the couch and start getting his food ready.

"Eh, neither of us are good at the whole taking it easy side of thing when it comes to recovery and all" Connor said with a small laugh.

He looked at Cutter with a look of concern and gently rubbed his back. "Need anything, Nick?"

"I'm good thank you," Cutter said softly, trying to assure Connor he was fine, "I think I'll be okay once I have some food though," his stomach started rumbling at that.

"Well thankfully there's plenty of that thanks to you," Connor said as he settled back with his plate of food. "I'll buy us dinner!"

Cutter smiled as he got his own plate and got comfortable, "I'll hold you to that," he grinned, "but I like the sound of that, a nice breakfast and a nice dinner, really nice company," he felt his cheeks start to turn red, "I mean we're only following instructions right?"

It was one of the few times that Cutter would ever be happy to actually follow instructions.

"Are you sure you're feeling ok Nick?" Connor asked, trying to feign concern but the smirk giving it away. "You're talking about following instructions and directions from someone." Connor leaned over and put his hand to Cutter's head as if checking for a fever.

Cutter laughed gently at that, “I’m okay Connor,” he assured him, “I definitely don’t have a fever,” but he wasn’t going to complain about Connor reaching over and his hand brushing his face.

“We’ll just chalk this one up to too much smoke inhalation,” he grinned, “I won’t be making a habit of this,” he added.

Because that would truly be terrifying when Cutter willingly started following instructions and advice and on a regular basis.

Connor narrowed his eyes slightly as if he wasn't quite sure about that, then grinned. "Ah there's the Nick I know and love," he said as he slowly dropped his hand and went back to the food.

Cutter grinned at that, turning his attention to his
own food, “see we’re going to be just fine,” he said confidently, “in a few days we’ll be as good as new,”

"Aye, and if I have to be laid up in bed... or on the couch in this case.. there's no one else I'd rather be recouping with," Connor said before digging in for a bit.

Cutter smiled warmly at that, "same here," he said gently, "and it's only going to be a for a few more days, at least we can stay here by ourselves this way,"
