An Abandoned Mansion - London
Aug. 25th, 2023 12:53 pmThe next day had come and after being assured by both Lester and Jenny that DC Quinn was not going to be a problem and they had authorisation to investigate the house as much as they needed, Cutter was still extremely nervous about running into Quinn again and was staying as close to Connor and Becker as he could as Becker's men secured the house.
"Have the readings changed at all?" he looked over at Connor who was holding his ADD and scanning the area.
Connor |
Connor had kept himself busy when they first arrived by setting up some of the devices around the house to try and pick up some new baseline readings. When that was done, he started walking through the various rooms with the handheld ADD unit. "The single is a little stronger I think" he said looking over at Cutter. "I-I don't think it's strong enough to suggest we missed an anomaly though. Maybe it means one is definitely here and is going to open soon?" |
Cutter |
Cutter looked thoughtful as he considered that, "we should head into the house," he decided, "if the single is stronger I think its safe to say that an anomaly has been here or will be here," "I think our predictions were right though, about there being an anomaly here," he said, "is the house secure?" he looked at Becker. |
| Becker nodded as he came over. "Three of my men are stationed around the perimeter of the property and I have done an initial sweep of all the rooms. No one else is here." Connor nodded and picked up one of the other handhelds and passed it over to Cutter. "Shall we then? The signal yesterday was stronger upstairs so I think that is where we need to start." | |
Cutter |
Cutter took the handheld device from Connor and took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves about going near the house again and quickly looking around to make sure Danny wasn't there, he couldn't see him so he nodded, "let's head up to the house," he said quietly, "we can start upstairs and then work our way down," he considered. |
Connor |
"That should work" Connor said, considering that for a moment, then nodding. "I'll take lead" he said as he started climbing he stairs, knowing how on edge Cutter still was about being at the house. |
Cutter |
Cutter nodded, "thank you," he said softly, following closely behind Connor, he tried to keep his nerves steady as he focused on his hand held and studied the readings that he was getting, "so far the readings seem to be steady," he said softly as they climbed the stairs. |
Connor |
"Yeah, actually..." Connor looked at the readings then pointed down the hall. "Looks like the signal is strongest down here and..." Connor was just off as the device started to beep loudly and the other ADD handheld chirped to life as well. "Nick...I, I think that anomaly of yours might have just opened!" he said a huge grin on his face as he looked at Cutter and then down the hallway. |
Cutter |
Cutter couldn't help a grin of his own as he looked at Connor and then followed his gaze down the hallway, "the anomaly prediction model works," he let out a laugh of relief, "shall we go and have a closer look?" he paused, "we need to keep a close eye out though, a creature may have come through," he warned. |
| Connor nodded and glanced at the device again. "Still a strong signal... the anomaly looks stable" He grinned as he reached out and gave Cutter a quick hug. "Your prediction was right!" A moment later, Connor let go, a huge grin still on his face as he leaned over the railing at the top and called down to Becker. "Becker, we got an anomaly up here!" "Alright, I'm heading up!" Becker called back up. "Don't go in without me!" | |
Cutter |
Cutter couldn't stop the smile as he returned the quick hug Connor gave him as he waited for Becker to join them, he was trying to not be too impatient but it was hard as he kept glancing in the direction of the anomaly but he also knew that it was important to wait for Becker as well. "I wonder where this anomaly leads?" he couldn't help but wonder. |
Becker |
"Well unless you guys have some tech that can tell us that" Becker said with a small huff as he cam running up the stairs, "we will have to figure out some other way to tell. Remember. No one goes into the anomaly!" He sounded stern but there was a smile on his face, betraying just how excited he was himself over the idea of this anomaly having actually opened. "I actually have a prototype I've been working on" Connor said reaching in the bag slung over his shoulder. "Still early testing stage but I have been trying to find a way to tell what time approximately he anomalies ope to." |
Cutter |
Cutter looked rather disappointed at not getting to go into the anomaly to check, "not even just to have a quick look around?" he was joking. Mostly. He looked over at Connor with a grin, "Oh that would definitely be useful to have, if we could work out the exact time period between that and the anomaly prediction model, we should be able to get a good head start on the anomalies," he said excitedly. |
Becker |
Becker gave Cutter a look. He knew that even in jest, there was some truth behind that request. "No one goes into the anomaly unless absolutely necessary," he reiterated. "I'll keep an eye on him" Connor said with a playful wink before turning back to Cutter and showing him the device. "It's a prototype right now, but I want to have a larger version we can set up an anomaly to help determine when and were it is linked to. If we can make it work, it might even be able to work with Connor's project of the device to lock an anomaly." And yes, that was still really weird to say, even after all this time. |
Cutter |
Cutter pouted a little, "fine," he sighed, "I won't go into the anomaly," and he meant it, even if he was still disappointed. Then he cheered up a little as he took a look at Connor's device, "oh this is brilliant," he gushed, he didn't quite completely understand the technological aspects since that was definitely's Connor's forte but he understood that the implications for the anomalies would be huge, "so between predicting when the anomalies can appear, what time period it is and being able to lock them, the research we can do on the anomalies ... this can definitely change everything," |
Connor |
"That's the plan anyways," Connor said with a grin. "Short of being able to control the anomaly to open when we want it to or to find a way to create a new anomaly where they're hasn't been one before, we could have the most control anyone has ever had over these anomalies. We could understand them like never before!" Connor was also gushing by this point as he glanced at the device in his hand and then with a go-ahead nod from Becker, turned and looked at Cutter. "Care to do the honors, Nick?" he asked, allowing him to go in first to take a look at the anomaly he had predicted. |
Cutter |
Cutter grinned, "well maybe once we finish everything else, we can start looking at opening anomalies ourselves?" he said, rather thrilled by the idea and then he nodded started to step forward to the room, like the rest of the house it was old and rundown and had once upon a time been used a bedroom with a dresser and mirror still in place. "Oh wow," he gushed as he stood before the anomaly, "I still can't believe it, we got the anomaly prediction model to work," he started to step closer to the anomaly. |
| Connor reached out to tap Cutter on the shoulder but Becker beat him to it as he ran over and put a hand on Cutter's shoulder, stopping him from getting any closer. "No going through" he reminded Cutter and then let go. Connor had to hide a small laugh as he turned his back on then and stated setting up some of the gear. When he trusted himself to look at them again he turned around, the new prototype in his hand and he took a step forward and stopped and then frowned slightly. "That's.... odd. I'm getting an erroneous reading for the date of the anomaly. It's telling me no date exists... but how can that be? The anomaly is here so there has to be something on the other side. The device is supposed to be able to calculate back as far in time as it needs to..."Connor studied the device. | |
Cutter |
Cutter stopped when Becker's hand rested on his shoulder, he stared at the anomaly for a few minutes longer and then sighed, turning to Connor with a frown, "that's strange," he considered, "how can there be no data, even as a prototype it should still be picking up some readings shouldn't it?" |
Connor |
Connor looked from the device up to the anomaly and then to Cutter. "Oh its got data but it can't seem to make any logical sense. I'm trying to get it to calculate the date like it is supposed to... but instead of a date its just spitting out this random string of numbers" Connor turned the device so Cutter would see the four digits appearing on the screen. Connor sighed as his shoulders slumped slightly. "Guess the prototype is a bust then... back to the bloody drawing board again." |
Cutter |
Cutter frowned thoughtfully, "maybe there's interference with the anomaly?" he offered, trying to keep Connor's hopes up, "I mean, the readings were all over the place the with ADDs, maybe its the same thing ... its an older anomaly so we can't get those accurate readings that we're used to? I'm sure the device will work," he assured him. |
| "Oh that could be part of it I guess" Connor said looking a little more hopeful at that. "Maybe with all the other data we can collect I can figure out what needs to be tweaked to filter out all the background interference and lock onto dates more easily!" | |
Danny |
To Becker's credit, he and his men had done a good job checking the property out and doing their initial security sweep. Danny had to give him props there. But they had failed to consider someone might be using the huge oak tree next to the house as a hiding spot. And so it was that Danny had a nearly perfect view into the upstairs floor. He watched Cutter and Connor with their gear and everything and he nearly fell off the branch he was perched on when he saw the anomaly open. It was like he was back in that house nearly 15 years ago again. He hadn't imagined it. The thing was really real! Tightening his hold and trying to keep himself from trembling with excitement, Danny stayed where he was, watching the team to see what they were up to. |

"Still early testing stage but I have been trying to find a way to tell what time approximately he anomalies ope to." |
Cutter |
Unaware that there was anyone watching them from afar, Cutter was tempted to move even closer to the anomaly but he stayed where he was, rocking back and forth as he tried to think of what the readings to the anomaly could mean, he started to glance around the room, "has anyone spotted any creatures? That might give us a clue to what time period we're dealing with?" |
Becker |
"I thought I had heard some scurrying when we first came in" Becker said. "But I didn't see anything. Probably just a squirrel or something we disturbed by coming in. Im sure critters have made their home in here over the years." |
Cutter |
Cutter looked thoughtful, "if the anomaly has just opened, maybe something has already come through," he began to walk over near where the dresser was to see if he could see anything, "we should start to have a look around the house, see if there's something here that definitely shouldn't belong here," |
Becker | Becker nodded slowly. "Alright but you two stay upstairs with me for now. We'll go downstairs and check there in a bit but I want you nearby in case anything happens." And with that Becker started moving around the edge of the room, checking the darker corners and under some of the covered furniture that still remained. He watched as Connor headed for the hallway and he gave him a silent reminder not to go too far. |
Cutter |
Cutter nodded, "okay," he agreed, "we'll stay here with you," he cast a quick glance back at the anomaly to make sure that nothing had come through in those few seconds and then he started to look in the opposite direction Becker was looking, trying to see if there was any sign of a creature. "Anything?" he called out to Becker and Connor. |
Connor |
"Nothing that I can see so far" Connor called out from the hallway as he entered the next room." Maybe we are lucky and nothing is there?" |
Cutter |
"Maybe," Cutter bit his lip, trying to decide whether to feel disappointed or relieved, "it may have found another hiding spot in the house or ... " and then something moved in the corner of his eye, "there, there's something here," he called. It had been so fast he hadn't been able to get a good glimpse of it but he knew it was there. |
Becker |
Becker was over to where Cutter had pointed in an instant. He didn't see anything but he pointed to the ground. "Scuff marks in the dust. Looks fresh like something ran through here" he said as he checked behind some boxes and an old mattress. "Don't see anything though." "Ah... guys?" Connor called out from the next room. "Becker?!" he called out sounding a little worried or frightened as he did. |
Cutter |
"It was fast," Cutter admitted, "very fast," he looked closely at the marks in the dust and then he looked up at Connor calling out from the next room, "Connor?" he called back, the alarm in his voice evident and he began to head to the other room and then stopped, figuring that Becker should check first in case it was the creature. |
Danny |
Becker nodded and headed in and was about to ask Connor what was wrong but didn't need too. The answer was clear as soon as he stepped into the room. "Hello boys. You miss me?" he asked with a smirk as he stood there in the room next to the opened window. "How the hell did you get in here?" Becker asked, the anger and annoyance evident in his voice as he glared at Danny, tightening the grip on his weapon though he didn't raise it just yet. "Ya know you guys did a pretty good sweep there, soldier boy" Danny said with a smirk "But you forgot one place to look" he added with a nod towards the tree out the window. "Rather careless mistake, wouldn't you say?" "And one I won't make again," Becker said through clenched teeth. |
Cutter |
Even though he knew there had been a chance that they were going to run into Danny, it was still unnerving to be face to face with the cop who had arrested him yesterday. Cutter clenched his fists as he glowered at Danny, "what are you doing here?" he snapped, standing just a little bit behind Becker in case Danny decided to try and arrest him again. |
| Connor looked from Becker to Danny and slowly edged his way closer to where Cutter was standing behind Becker. "What are you doing here?" he snapped trying not to sound as nervous as he felt. | |
Danny |
"I told you I was going to find out what you all were up to" Danny grinned. "I knew there was something odd about this house. I knew i wasnt mad and hadn't imagined everything all those years ago!" |
Cutter |
“You had seen an anomaly then,” Cutter said before he could stop himself, he’d let Lester and Jenny deal with the PR side of it later, “that’s why you were so interested in the house,” he glanced over at Connor. |
Connor |
"You saw something you couldn't explain, and of course, no one would believe you without proof" Connor said as he looked at Danny. "How long ago was it? When did you see the anomaly?" Danny looked over at Connor and then glanced between Cutter and Becker before answering. "It was over 12 years ago." "You've been trying to find out what was going on here for more than a decade?" Connor asked in disbelief. "No wonder you wouldn't take no for an answer when we showed up..." |
Cutter |
“12 years?” Cutter glanced down at his ADD thoughtfully, “that explains all these readings, why the it was registering anomaly signals but no anomaly …” “Why didn’t you let us investigate yesterday ?” he looked back at Danny, “you knew Becker was military, that we were looking into the house,” |
Danny |
"So you guys could pick me for information and then shut this all down and keep it under lock and key?" Danny asked incredulously. "Do I look like an idiot? I am going to figure out what that thing is and no military goons are going to keep me from the truth! I've spent too much time trying to uncover this!" |
| “We could have kept the house secure,” Cutter replied, feeling his temper start to rise, “these anomalies are dangerous, I’m surprised no one has gone through them or worse been killed by a creature,” he snapped. He was definitely saying too much now but Danny was making him angry. | |
Becker |
"Alright, let's all just calm down" Becker said, putting a hand on Nick's shoulder to try and calm him down. "Theres things we can and cannot figure out this way." "And things we can't share either!" Connor said, glaring at Danny. |
Cutter |
Cutter trembled but Becker’s hand on his shoulder helped calm him down somewhat, he glared angrily at Danny, “we’ve already wasted valuable time, we need to lock the building down and you need to leave,” he snapped at Danny, his Scottish accent starting to come through. |
Danny |
""Sorry mate not happening. I've been mocked and nearly lost my position on the force because of this house and what I saw that day" Danny said staring down Cutter. "I've been looking for answers for years. And now that I am this close to getting them, no one is going to stop me!" Danny stood and glared at Becker as if daring him to move out of the way. He was so caught up in the exchange he didn't notice the sheet covering the old couch behind him move a little as if something was walking along the back of the couch towards him. |
Cutter |
Danny may not have spotted the creature behind him but Cutter did and froze, glancing from the sheet and then back to Danny, “Becker,” he said in a hushed voice so as to not disturb the creature, “it’s here,” |
Danny |
"What's here mate?" Danny asked tilting his head at them questioningly. "Shhh!" Becker snapped as he tried to get Danny to be quiet. "Don't shush me!" Danny snapped, which just earned another shush from Connor as he caught sight of the creature, though the camouflage ability it had definitely made it difficult to see. |
| "I don't recognise this creature," Cutter realised as he stared at it for a few moments, also realising that the creature could camouflage itself, "do you think we're dealing with a future anomaly? Maybe that's why your device wasn't able to get a precise reading?" he said to Connor in a hushed whisper. | |
Danny |
"I hadn't thought of that..." Connor said, staring between Danny and the creature. "It's the only thing that makes sense. There's no creature like this in the fossil record. It must be from the future." "Would someone kindly tell me what the heck is going on and..." Danny turned around to see what they were staring at and his voice trailed off. "What the bloody hell is that thing?" he asked as he stared at the creature as it shifted out of its camouflage mode. |
Cutter |
"That …” Cutter said, nodding towards the creature, "is a creature that came through the anomaly and why it's important we shut the site down," He hesitated, "you don't think ... you don't think Helen has anything to do with this do you?" he said quietly to Connor. |
Connor |
"Hard to tell really" Connor said keeping his gaze fixed on the creature, shifting his gaze away only when Danny started to slowly shift his way over towards them. "Bigger question right now is what do we do about it and the anomaly? Dang it I really wish we had a way to lock these things!" |
Cutter |
"Is there a way that we can lure the creature back to the anomaly?" Cutter wondered, even though it wasn't that long of a distance between the two rooms, the fact that the creature could camouflage itself would prove to be difficult, "I don't know about closing it though, the fact that it's opened at least twice that we know of ...and who knows how many more times before that, there could be more creatures around the house ..." he said, feeling really uneasy about there being more future creatures like this out there and them not knowing about it. |
Connor |
"I don't like the sound of that" Connor said biting his lower lip. "The creature, or creatures possibly, could have come through the anomaly today when it reopened or they could have been trapped here in the house since it last opened, over 12 years ago..." |
| "We're going to need to search the whole house," Cutter realised, "we can't leave it to chance that there's more creatures in the house, especially if the anomaly is unstable," His uneasy feeling grew, this was going to take time and it was time that they didn't have. | |
Connor |
"Right... so what do we do with this one in the meantime?" Connor asked, pointing at the creature. "I say we just shoot the thing and put it out of its mystery" Danny said as he drew his pistol. "No!" Connor cried out, startling the creature and causing it to run off toward the anomaly in the next room. |
Cutter |
Cutter watched the creature run off towards the anomaly, he tilted his head thoughtfully, "I think we have just found our solution," he said, "we create enough noise, we could draw any creatures hiding in the house and draw them back to the anomaly," |
Becker |
"I still say we should shoot the buggers," Danny said. "We don't do things that way" Becker said, not at all about to admit that at times he agreed with Danny on that bit of protocol. "We try to keep the creatures alive and get them back where they need to be unharmed if at all possible." |
Cutter |
"We're not shooting the creatures," Cutter said firmly, "but we could see use the guns to draw them out of hiding," he looked at Danny and Becker thoughtfully, "do you think you can do that, make enough noise to draw any creatures still hiding in the house and lure them to the anomaly?" |
Becker |
"You mean use ourselves as live bait?" Danny asked, raising and eyebrow at Cutter. Becker ignored him and nodded after a moment's thought. "We can do that. I'll head downstairs and try and flush any of the creatures hiding down there up here towards the anomaly." |
Cutter |
"And now you know why these anomalies are dangerous and why this house should have been shut down sooner," Cutter remarked, raising his own eyebrow at Danny, "this is the nature of our work, so if you really want answers ... you can help us getting the creatures back to the anomaly," he said, "Connor and I can stay here, keep an eye on the anomaly," he looked at Becker and Connor to see if they were okay with that. |
| Becker considered Connor and Cutter for a moment then nodded slowly. "Alright, just stay back from it so you don't get caught by any creatures we flush out. Stay safe" he said as he got his weapon ready and started for the stairs. "And what about me?" Danny asked raising his hands as if he was being ignored. "Start at the far end of the hall upstairs here. Flush any creatures you find down here towards the anomaly" Becker said. "I meant more what about me if any of the creatures decide to attack and come after me!" Danny quipped. "I am sure a Detective Comissioner like you will be just fine, Quinn" Becker said with a slight smirk as he headed down the stairs, not acknowledging the glare Danny sent his way as he did. | |
Cutter |
Once Becker and Danny had left, Cutter glanced over at Connor, still feeling rather nervous about what they were about to do, "I suppose we should head back to the other room, stand watch over the anomaly so the others can get the creatures back to it," |
| Connor nodded, trying not to look too worried, but he was a bit on edge about this. It was bad enough dealing with the anomalies and creatures, and now Danny was there and getting involved and... Connor took a slow deep breath to calm himself as he tried to give a small smile. "Yeah let's get into position" he said as he headed off towards the room, the ADD handheld ready as he started monitoring the reading to make sure it didn't look like the anomaly was going to close on them suddenly. "Should probably stand behind the anomaly? Be out of the way if there are any other creatures?" | |
Cutter |
"We'll be fine," Cutter tried to assure him, as they walked towards the room, "and I think standing behind the anomaly is the best plan," there was a pause, "and I'm sure Becker would appreciate us not being in the anomaly itself," he added with a sheepish grin, especially considering how many warnings Becker had had to give him to not go in the anomaly to begin with. |
Connor |
"Yeah, no going into the anomaly. I'm not going to be the one to face Becker and tell him you got dragged in by a creature," Connor said with a slight smirk. The noise echoing down the hall caught his attention. "Alright, get ready. We'll see if anything else comes this way!" |
Cutter |
Cutter gave a small sheepish smile at that, "I won't give you cause to have to face Becker," he promised, "no going into the anomaly or getting caught by creatures," He tilted his head in the direction of the noise, "okay, we should also get as many readings as we can as the creatures start to come back," he added thoughtfully, "it might help with the anomaly prediction model," he started to get his device ready to start recording the readings. |
Connor |
Connor nodded and got his own devices set up and ready, giving a quick thumbs up when they were recording. And it wasn't a minute too soon either as a short time later, another creature ran into the room. It gave an annoying hiss over it shoulder at the intruders that had disturbed it and then ran right into the anomaly."Did you see that?" Connor asked, meaning both eh creature and the sudden flux in the readings on the handheld as the anomaly reacted. |
Cutter |
"Oh this is incredible," Cutter gushed at both the creature and the readings that they were getting, "we'll be able to compare the data we got from the residual past anomaly readings with these new anomaly readings," he said excitedly. And he really couldn't help himself, he started to move a bit closer to the anomaly to see if he could get a stronger reading. |
| "Easy there Nick" Connor said, suddenly pulling his attention away from the reading and putting a hand on Cutter's shoulder to stop him. "Remember, THIS side of the anomaly, alright?" Connor let go when he was sure Cutter wasn't going to just walk into the anomaly and studied the readings a bit. "I will have to compare these readings to what we have gotten from anomalies linked to the past, but... they definitely seem to be different. We... we might be able to tell the future anomalies apart from the normal ones!" | |
Cutter |
Cutter sighed, "fine, this side of the anomaly," he shifted a bit as he took in the anomaly and then looked down at the readings, "this will definitely be helpful for our research with the model," he grinned up at Connor, "maybe we can find a pattern in all of this ... why past anomalies appear or future anomalies appear, the different conditions of each ..." his voice trailed off as he got lost in thought for a moment, "the research implications of this are endless," |
Connor |
"And maybe even figure out why some anomalies open more often and stay open longer than others!" Connor was about to say something else when Becker appeared in the doorway, followed a moment later by Danny. "I think we got them all" Connor said with a nod towards Becker. |
Cutter |
Cutter stared at the anomaly, which was still open, “the anomaly could be open for sometime, it could be open for days, we would have to wait and monitor the anomaly until it closed,” he said thoughtfully as he tried to come up with what to do about the anomaly. |
| "I'll volunteer to take a shift or two" Danny said from where he had been standing in the doorway. "Not a chance!" Becker said firmly. "You are lucky we haven't kicked you out of here yet. You are not getting anywhere near the anomaly unsupervised!" "Now that hardly seems fair and all considering I just helped you guys out and all!" | |
Cutter |
"Helped us?" Cutter was just going to stare at Danny incredulously, "you nearly wrecked everything, you arrested us!" Yes Cutter was not going to let that one go anytime soon Danny. |
Danny |
"I arrested you because you were trespassing," Danny said and then looked over at Becker. "And yes I just helped you guys with this little anomaly or whatever you call it. It's obvious you guys needed the help, so a thank you and a little respect would be appreciated!" |
Cutter |
Cutter glowered at Danny, "respect?" he clenched his fists, he had to remind himself that punching a cop would be a really bad idea, "that's a good one, we told you we couldn't tell you anything and you wouldn't listen to us, that's hardly our fault," |
Danny |
"And I was supposed to what, just take your word for it?" Danny scoffed as he glared back at Cutter. "And besides, clearly you all need the help. I mean, soldier boy here didn't even think to check the trees when he was scouting the place out." "So that was where you were hiding out" Becker said as he walked over towards Danny. "Thanks for letting me know. Now, you are getting off the premises! he said as he grabbed Dannys arm to start leading him back down the stairs. "Oiy let go!" Danny pulled his arm away and glared at Becker "I am not going anywhere until I get some actual answers on what is going on here!" "I can arrest you if you like" Becker said coldly. "See how you like it?" "Alright fine. I'm going I'm going" Danny muttered as he started down the stairs. |
Cutter |
Cutter felt some satisfaction as he watched Becker begin to drag Danny away and breathed a sigh of relief once Danny started to make his way down the stairs. He let out a sigh of relief, "hopefully that's the last time we have to deal with him," he remarked to Connor. |
Connor |
Connor also relaxed a bit as he watched Danny leave. "If I never see him again it will be too soon!" he commented as he went back to checking the anomaly and getting as much data as he could before they left Becker's men to secure the site and head back to the ARC to report in to Lester. A moment or two later the sound of a motorbike speeding off caught his attention and Connor glanced out of the window just in time to see Danny speeding off down the road and out of sight. |
Cutter |
Cutter nodded as he followed Connor's gaze out the window, "I really don't like him," he grumbled, "hopefully he's satisfied with the answers he got and he'll stay away," He turned his attention back to the anomaly, "I'll never get tired of seeing an anomaly," he stared at it as he held his own device out to record as much data as he could. |
