A few hours later and they had finally made it back to the ARC, Cutter reeling from thinking that the traitor had been Jenny to finding out that it was Leek and they had gotten back as quickly as they could, only to find Lester had been attacked by the future predator that was being controlled by Leek. Lester had managed to get away by releasing the Mammoth and after his earlier griping about it, actually seemed rather fond of the Mammoth now and had even volunteered to take it home for his children so they could have a pet.
Jenny was still furious with Cutter, which he deserved that, he knew that he couldn’t blame her for that but after talking to her for a little bit, she had seemed to calm down a bit.
Meanwhile both Connor’s had got to work on the ADD, trying to access Leek’s file and had come up with a location, only in the process it had set off a bomb timer and Cutter and Connor had worked to disarm it.
And now after all that Lester had refused to let Cutter’s team come along, officially handing the operation over to the military, when Cutter had tried to protest Lester had pointed out that he was a civilian and an injured civilian on top of that, the paperwork alone would have been nightmare to finish.
Cutter reluctantly found himself left behind and very, very bored.
Connor ![]() |
It really was cruel, leaving them out of things like this. Neither of them did that good with boredom and being still. He looked over at Cutter who was sitting beside him at the ADD Hub, and gave a small weak smile. "Well, at least we don't have to go running around aggravating the ribs and all," he offered, trying to find something positive to focus on. His were feeling pretty good but Cutter had definitely gotten the worse of their encounter with Helen and Stephen, so maybe it was a good thing they had a little forced relaxing time? Maybe? Possibly? Probably not... |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter grimaced at the idea of doing any running, he had definitely aggravated his ribs in between running up to Jenny and then running around and trying to defuse the bomb, he sighed, "I guess..." he grumbled, "but I would still much prefer not waiting around," he sighed. |
Connor ![]() |
Connor nodded and held his hand out for Cutter to take. "Yeah the waiting sucks. But, at least we are safe in here. And maybe we can think of something to do to pass the time." Connor glanced over to where Abby and Connor were talking... arguing... discussing? It was hard to tell, really. "Hopefully better than they are," he added with a small smirk. |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter did manage a small smile at that as he reached out to take Connor's hand, "I'm open to any suggestions," he grinned and he followed Connor's gaze to Abby and his Connor, "they're still at it," he shook his head, "have they even managed to breathe since they started ...arguing?" he tilted his head, it did kind of sound like arguing ... a bit, if you squinted. |
Connor ![]() |
"Yeah Abby can get... long-winded when she gets really upset and rilled up...." Connor said with a nod, remembering his own share of heated debates and disagreements back what seemed like a lifetime ago, when he and the Abby from his timeline had tried to make things work out between them. He pulled his eyes away from them and then turned to Cutter, giving his hand a small squeeze. "Lester's going after Leek. Maybe we could find a way to get Rex back? We could get him from Caroline and probably be back before Lester gets back..." |
Cutter ![]() |
“She does have a bit of a temper doesn’t she?” Cutter winced a little, he was secretly rather terrified of Abby and did not want to get on her bad side. He tilted his head a bit at that, liking the sound of them going after Rex, “you know that could work, maybe she would be more likely if it was just us two going? I’m sure between the two of us we could convince her to give him back,” he considered. |
Connor ![]() |
Smart man you were Cutter! "Definitely. She and Abby never got along so probably best to leave those two at it" he said with a nod to the still-arguing couple. "But yeah, I think we should be able to get Rexy back with no trouble at all!" |
Cutter ![]() |
"Then we'll do that," Cutter decided, "how hard would it be to trace Caroline's phone?" He really had no idea how these things worked, that's why he always left the tech stuff to Connor. |
Connor ![]() |
Connor held out a hand for a 50-50 kinda of indication and then turned his chair around and started keying up some commands in the ADD. "I did a recent update to help us track where anomalies might be reappearing. I can trace Caroline's phone and it will show us the most recent places she has been. Odds are, wherever she is now, that she's got Rex with her!" |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter smiled, "well it's better than where we were before," he smiled, "if we hurry, I bet we could even sneak off before anyone realises where we've gone," he said, his eyes twinkling at the thought of them getting away. What could possibly go wrong? |
Connor ![]() |
"Alright.. just give me a minute... and...." Connor punched a couple of keys and then grinned. "Yes, got it. That should be Caroline's last pinged location which means she is likely still there." He glanced around at Abby and Connor and leaned in closer to Cutter. "They are still going at each other, and I am pretty sure I saw Jenny having a heated discussion with someone on her phone, so she's probably locked in her office right now." |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter quickly looked around to double check where everyone was and what the odds were of them getting out before they were spotted, "I'll text Jenny once we leave to let her know that we left, you know what they say better to ask forgiveness than permission?" It didn't quite work that way Cutter. |
Connor ![]() |
Maybe not but Connor had used that same line of logic before. And it WAS kinda the default setting with anything to do with asking Lester permission over something so.... it might work out ok? "Sounds good. I think we should be good to slip out now, while we have the chance," Connor said as he grabbed a couple of the detectors and handhelds and slipped them into his bag. "Lead the way!" |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter grinned and after another quick glance he led them out of the ARC to the car so that they could go and hopefully get Rex back before anyone noticed they were gone. It was simple right? "We'll be back before they know it," Famous last words Cutter. |
Connor ![]() |
"Aye, quick and easy!" Connor agreed as he got in and started reading out directions to Cutter as they headed out. There was absolutely no way this would go wrong! |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter drove them to what looked like an abandoned warehouse, "are you sure that this is the place?" he looked a little confused, from the little that he knew of Caroline, this did not seem the type of place she would hang out. |
Connor ![]() |
"This is where the detector pinged her phone last" Connor reassured him. "If she's not here now she was here not too long ago. I know it. I don't make mistakes with this sort of thing...." Connor glanced over at Cutter and sighed. "Often. And not now... this is definitely where Caroline's phone should be." |
Cutter ![]() |
Something was not right with this but Cutter couldn't pinpoint what it was, he looked around trying to see if he could spot Caroline's phone, then he spotted something on the ground, "is that her phone?" he asked as he walked over to it. |
Connor ![]() |
"Yeah, that's it" Connor said as he ran over and picked the phone up. "So, she should still be here. Caroline never goes anywhere without her phone. She must have dropped it before going inside." |
Cutter ![]() |
"Do you want to start checking out the buildings then? See if we can track her down?" Cutter was really not liking this, they were too exposed and there were too many buildings for them to check. |
Connor ![]() |
"Yeah, let's just check out one or two of these closest ones. See if we can find her," Connor said and then remembered. "Did you send Jenny that text? Looks like there's a lot of steel in these buildings, might not have much signal once we get inside." |
Cutter ![]() |
“I’ll send one to her now,” Cutter got out his phone and typed a quick sorry we left, chasing a lead where Rex is, explain when we get back text to Jenny and looked at the buildings that Connor was indicating, “seems like a good place as any to start,” he nodded. |
Connor ![]() |
"Alright, let's go" Connor said as he grabbed his torch and flicked it on and tried the door closest to where the phone had been. "It's unlocked" he said with a nod and pushed it open and held it open for Cutter. |
Cutter ![]() |
"Well that's something at least, we don't have to try actually breaking in and explaining to Lester why I was breaking and entering on private property," Cutter said with a small uneasy smile as he walked through the door and began looking around. He couldn't see anyone was about and the building looked rather dark and eerie. He shivered. "I mean he'll probably still read me the riot act after this," he admitted, "I don't think I'll be let back out in the field anytime soon," Well that was true just not for the reasons Cutter thought. |
Connor ![]() |
Connor nodded as he shone his torch around. It was odd... A lot of this place, he noted as they wandered the hallway, seemed like it had not been touched in some time. So what was Caroline's phone doing there? "Little further then maybe try the next building?" |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter nodded, "let's see what's up ahead, even though so far these buildings look rather abandoned," he tilted his head, "so how does Caroline's phone end up here of all places?" |
Connor ![]() |
'I don't know* Connor said shaking his head as he led them down the hallway. "Makes me worried though. Maybe something bad happened to her .." |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter nodded, “this feels wrong, maybe if we don’t find anything we should head back and call for backup?” This was definitely a first for him. |
Connor ![]() |
"Yeah... might be best," Connor said with a nod. "Let's just keep going down this hall. It should lead us back out and then we can circle around back to the car." |
Cutter ![]() |
“Okay we’ll do that,” Cutter nodded as they continued down the hall and turned the corner, then stopped abruptly. Helen and Stephen were waiting for them. “You know,” Helen said gleefully, “I was wondering who was going to turn up, I’m very happy it was you two, hello Nick, Connor,” she purred. “ I really should have brought back up,” Cutter sighed, Lester was going to have a field day day with this. |
Connor ![]() |
"Oh you have got to be kidding me...." Connor said as he felt his stomach drop in an instant. This was not good. This was so many multiple layers of not good. Connor's gaze was locked on Helen and Stephen, almost trying to convince himself he was just imagining this. His hand reached out blindly, trying to find Cutter's in that moment. |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter reached out for Connor’s hand at the same time, so it wasn’t long before he found it. He tensed considerably, his grip on Connor’s hand tightening. “What do you want Helen?” he growled. “Now really Nick,” Helen shook her head, “I’m rather disappointed, I think you might want to tread very, very carefully, you do not have the advantage here,” |
Stephen ![]() |
"Not that the two of you ever had much of an advantage to begin with," Stephen said from where he stood just at the edge of the light and shadows in that hallway. "I mean, it's what? One decent brain between the two of you? And we know who's got the brains so... guess it's pretty obvious who the dead weight is" he added with a sneer as he locked eyes with Connor. |
Connor ![]() |
"Shut... up... Stephen..." Connor said through clenched teeth, trying not to let Stephen get into his head that easily. "We don't want anything to do with you, any more than you want to see us. Just let us go and forget this." |
Helen ![]() |
“Oh this is so sweet,” Helen purred, “no I think we’re going to have some fun first, got to keep you out of the way before we’re ready to launch our plan,” Cutter had to remember how to breathe, this was very bad, very bad and they were at a major disadvantage . He tried one more desperate tactic, “let Connor go Helen, please, it’s me you want, you can have me,” |
Connor ![]() |
Connor turned and stared at Cutter, giving him a look that clearly said "like hell I’m leaving you with them." "Nice try Nick," Stephen said taking a step towards them. "I'm really going to enjoy this I think," he said before he pulled back and let one single punch go, landing squarely on Cutter's jaw again. |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter really should have seen that coming shouldn’t he? He stumbled backwards when the force of Stephen’s blow caught by him in the jaw, which had already been tender from Helen’s punch several days earlier. He bit back a cry of pain, not wanting to give Stephen and Helen the satisfaction but his eyes still watered and he cursed. |
Connor ![]() |
"Nick!" Connor cried out as he stepped over to catch Cutter as he stumbled back. He glanced at Cutter then turned his attention to Stephen and then to Helen. This was bad. This was really bad. Connor tried to reach into his back pocket to take out his phone. Maybe, if he could distract Helen and Stephen somehow... maybe he could get a text out to Jenny... maybe. |
Cutter ![]() |
Helen saw what Connor was trying to and shook her head, “now, now I’ll have that please, yours too Nick, don’t want the fun to be ruined too early,” Once the phones were in her possession, she dropped them to the floor and with a smirk, she stomped on them hard and broke them into several pieces. Cutter watched in dismay, clutching his throbbing jaw. They were really screwed now weren’t they? |
Connor ![]() |
Yeah, not good... Connor should have expected as much. He glanced over at Cutter, lifting a hand to go and check and make sure he was ok. He was cut off by Stephen, who stepped between them and gave Connor a small shove, sending him back a few steps. "Hand it over Nick" Stephen said, holding a hand out and leveling his gaze at Cutter. "I know you have it, so just make this easier on yourself and hand it over." He glared as Cutter hesitated. "Or I can just take it from you, your choice. What’ll it be Nick?" |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter hesitated, glancing at Connor to make sure he was okay, or at least as well as he could be given the circumstances. He had hoped Stephen had forgotten about his gun, that he could use it to get them out of here but he knew that he was in no shape to be going toe to toe with Stephen when he wasn’t injured …he had no hope in their current situation , He sighed and took out his gun and carefully took out the cartridge to show that it was empty and tossed it over to Stephen, he raised his hands in the ‘I surrender ‘ position. |
Stephen ![]() |
"See, the logical choice there for once, Nick," Stephen said with a victorious grin as he took the gun and slipped it into his jacket. "Now I'm sure the guy who still uses flip phones doesn't have anything really we need to worry about." Here Stephen glanced from Cutter over to Helen. "Think we need to worry about Connor?" he asked giving a nod over to where he was, having moved closer to Cutter after that exchange. |
Helen ![]() |
“Well he is the brains of the outfit, supposedly,” Helen remarked, her eyes gleaming as she looked Connor up and down, “what kind of tech are you hiding there,” She slowly began to walk over to Connor, occasionally padding and prodding and then she gave him a very, very thorough pat down. She came back with the ADD Detector and several other electronic devices, and then she found a few more, “I must say Connor I’m actually impressed,” she remarked as she was pretty satisfied that she had found all of the hiding places for his devices. Cutter glanced at Connor, “you’ve been carrying all of that the entire time?” and then he winced at the pain in his jaw, talking was clearly going to be an issue. |
Connor ![]() |
Connor knew he had no chance of actually fighting off Helen or Stephen at that point. But that didn't mean he was just going to stand there. Every time she went to check some other pocket or layer he squirmed out of the way, making her work for it. And when her hands started going where they definitely had no business going, he actually tried to fight back and push her away. Once it was all said and done, and she stood there with all his tech and gear, Connor felt his heart sink. He had a pretty good idea where they were going to end up, and as devastating as the thought of not having a way to call anyone for help, in a way, losing all his tech, that was just as devastating a thought to him. Connor sighed, trying not to think about that as he glared at Helen, and glanced over at Cutter at that question. "Yeah, I usually have most of it. You really think we get through most incursions with just one anomaly detector?" |
Helen ![]() |
Helen’s eyes lit up as she looked Connor up and down, as if she was seeing him in an entirely new light and Cutter really, really didn’t like the way she was looking at Connor right then. “Now where have you been hiding this whole time, I underestimated you Connor … I will not make that mistake again,” she purred, “you and I are going to have a lot of fun together,” |
Connor ![]() |
Connor felt a cold chill run down his spine at the way Helen looked at him and what she said. But he tried not to show it and just kept his gaze locked on her. "I wouldn't count on it, Helen," Connor said, his voice quivering ever so slightly despite his best efforts. Inside he was near panicking. No one knew where they were. No one would be bursting through the door in the next few minutes to save them. They were on their own. |
Helen ![]() |
Helen laughed, it was cold and chilling and Cutter winced at it, he wondered if he could try pleading with Stephen to make him see reason but the pain in his jaw was unbearable and the thought of trying to talk at all was the last thing he felt like doing. He tried to make eye contact with Stephen, maybe somewhere the man who was his best friend was still there ... that he would come through and save them. "We'll see about that," she smiled sweetly, "they always say that at the start, you'll be singing a different tune in a few days," |
Stephen ![]() |
Stephen gave a small chuckle at the look that spread on Connor's face at the mention of a few days. "You two aren't going anywhere. Helen and I have plans, and I’m pretty sure you both are not going to play a big part in all of it." |
Cutter ![]() |
"Stephen..." Cutter croaked, wincing at the throbbing in his jaw, "Stephen please, it's not to late, you can stop this before it gets any bigger than it needs to ..." he had to stop, it was hurting too much to speak. He looked at Connor, despair written across his face, at the predicament that he had gotten them into. He really, really, really should have brought back up. |
Connor ![]() |
Connor looked over at Cutter and took the one and a half steps it took to close the distance between them and he pulled him into a hug. More protective than comforting as he glared over Nick's shoulder. His eyes were pained with the betrayal he felt when he looked at Stephen and cold with the anger he felt when he looked at Helen. Every time he looked at her all he saw were those final moments of Cutter's life, his Cutter, the one she had killed and left for dead. It was like reliving flashes of one of the worst days of his life every time, and he frankly was getting tired of seeing Helen this much. |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter was grateful for that hug, to wrap his arms around Connor and hold him tight, he trembled as he held onto Connor. He didn’t know what possessed him right then but an idea crept into his mind, he closed his eyes took a deep breath and then counted in his head to three and then pulled away, “now,” he tried to grab Connor’s hand to make a break for it, to run back towards the exit. |
Stephen ![]() |
Connor blinked in surprise but took only half a second before he was following after Cutter as they made a desperate run towards the exit. Stephen gave chase, the couple-second head start quickly made up by his long quick strides. Reaching out towards them, Stephen grabbed hold of the back of Connor's jacket and pulled him back. "Nick! Go on, go!" Connor tried to yell out as Stephen shoved him aside sending him into the concert wall and took another step before tacking Cutter to the ground. |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter knew it had been a long shot to be able to get away like that, he had hoped the surprise of his action might have given them a bit more time. He stopped, hesitating just a moment when Stephen sent Connor flying into the wall and it was that hesitation that saw Stephen catch up to him, he couldn't have left Connor in Helen's hands, there was no telling what she would do to him after those threats she had made. He let out a moan of pain when Stephen tackled him to the ground and winced at the impact on his ribs, "oof" he groaned. |
Stephen ![]() |
Stephen landed a little harder than he had intended to but he kept his hold on Cutter and dragged him closer as he tried to scramble free. After a moment's struggle, which he found impressive from Cutter really, Stephen had him pinned to the ground, hand on his arms as he was nearly straddling his legs to keep him from fighting back. "What's wrong Nick?" he asked with a sly grin as he tightened his grip. "You should be used to this. You always liked being on the bottom after all." Stephen glanced over at Helen and then back to Cutter. "It's a good look on you." |
Helen ![]() |
Helen watched, smirking at Stephen struggling with Cutter on the ground, at Cutter trying desperately trying to get away but Stephen was too strong, “yes, yes it is a very good look, don’t get up now Nick” she purred, “come now, you always loved this … this is just like old times,” |
Cutter ![]() |
"Go to hell," Cutter managed to gasp out, trying in vain to kick out at Stephen to get him off him, but he couldn't move his legs, as much as he hated to admit it Stephen had him well and truly pinged on the ground. He felt a surge of panic at how close Stephen was, his and Helen's cruel jabs and he was utterly helpless. He tried to turn his head, to see where Connor was but he couldn't move. |
Connor ![]() |
Connor had hit his head on the wall when Stephen had shoved him to the side during the scuffle. He sat on the ground, back to the wall and looked on in horror. The anger he felt inside did nothing for the throbbing in his head, but when he heard what Helen and Stephen were saying, the vile taunts they were throwing at Cutter, Connor couldn't take it anymore. "Get off of him!" he yelled as he jumped to his feet and dove onto Stephen's back, grabbing him around the neck as he tried to pull him off. "Let...him... go," Connor said giving a tug at Stephen's neck with each word. |
Stephen ![]() |
Stephen shifted at the sudden weight landing on him but it didn't have the impact Connor was probably hoping that it would. Stephen groaned at the sudden pressure on his neck, but he easily grabbed Connor's arm with one hand, breaking his grip. "You just don't know when to sit and shut up do you?" he sneered as he let go of Cutter for a moment, still essentially pinning him down with his body weight. He reached back to try and grab Connor and pull him off his back. He managed to get a handful of Connor's hair as his other hand grabbed his jacket again. Stephen threw Connor off, sending him sliding the short distance till he stopped against the wall closer to where Helen was. "Now stay down!" Stephen yelled as he turned his attention back to Cutter, even as he saw out of the corner of his eyes that Connor was trying to stagger back to his feet already. |
Cutter ![]() |
“Connor!” Cutter could hear the struggle but he was still pinged to the ground, “don’t hurt him please!” he winced at the pain in his jaw, at how much it was hurting having Stephen on top of him. To his horror he let out a sob as he struggled to even try and be able to crawl away. |
Cutter ![]() |
This was turning out better than she could have ever hoped, Helen laughed in delight as she watched Stephen take on both Connor and Cutter. “Oh this is wonderful,” she said cheerfully, especially taking a moment to appreciate Stephen being on top of Cutter right then, then there was the added bonus of watching him effortlessly throw Connor back into the wall, “and to think I thought I was going to be so bored this afternoon,” |
Stephen ![]() |
Connor groaned as he hit the wall and then the ground. But he could still hear Stephen and he knew Cutter was still in trouble. Slowly he tried to pick himself up and tried to stagger back towards Stephen, trying to ignore how close he was to Helen at that point. Stephen gave a sigh that was more annoyed than worried when he saw Connor stagger to his feet. He glared down at Cutter. He had had enough of this ridiculousness. Reaching into his jacket, he pulled out Cutter's unloaded gun. "You brought this on yourself, Nick" he said as he raised the gun and brought it down against the side of Cutter's head. "Nick!" Connor cried out as he ran over, dropping to his knees beside Cutter just as Stephen stood up, brushing himself off. "Nick... Nick..." Connor said as he knelt there, trying to pull Cutter into his arms and away from Stephen. |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter’s head felt like exploding when the back of the gun hit him and before he could stop himself he let out a cry of pain, his head now throbbing in addition to the pain in his jaw. It didn’t matter that Stephen had actually gotten off him, he was in too much agony to try and move and he was dimly aware of Connor trying to move him but the sudden movement caused another shockwave of pain and he let out another scream of agony. |
Stephen ![]() |
Stephen watched with a somewhat unamused look. The fun was over, and honestly seeing Connor fawn over Cutter like that just pissed him off. So, slipping the gun back into his jacket, Stephen walked over, practically stepping over Connor as he made his way to Helen. He stood in front of her for a moment, a sly grin spreading over his face as he leaned over and kissed her. Whether Cutter or Connor was watching didn't matter. But he kind of hopped they were as he deepened the kiss, knowing Helen enjoyed this just as much as he did. |
Helen ![]() |
Helen hadn’t been expecting the kiss but she definitely welcomed it and in a moment had forgotten all about Nick and Connor on the floor and turned her attention to Stephen and let out a moan of pleasure at the kiss as she eagerly leaned in and returned the kiss. |
Connor ![]() |
Connor gave a disgusted look at Stephen and Helen and then turned his attention back to Cutter, being careful not to jostle or move him any more than he already had. Connor just wrapped his arms around Cutter protectively and held his hand in his, trying to comfort him in some way as he felt hot tears of anger, and fear, start to fall. "Nick... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry Nick..." |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter desperately wanted to tell Connor that it was going to be okay but he could only whimper, the most he could do was lay there in Connor’s arms, grateful that he wasn’t alone. |
Stephen ![]() |
"Oh stop being so pathetic, Nick" Stpehen said with an exasperated sigh as he pulled away from Helen and glared over at the two. He reached over and took one of the guns Helen had on her and then turned and leveled it toward Cutter. To his credit, he DID take the extra second or two to make sure it was the tranq gun he had grabbed. With a slight grin at the look of horror on Connor's face, he pulled the trigger, sending a small yellow tranq dart into Cutter's leg. "What the bloody hell did you do that for?" Connor cried out as he watched in both shock and horror. Stephen gave a small shrug as he handed the gun back to Helen. "I didn't feel like having to punch him again." |
Cutter ![]() |
Cutter let out a yelp of pain as the dart hit his leg, those things really did hurt and after several moments of an intense searing pain in which his whole body ached, he finally fell into a blissful slumber in Connor's arms. He wasn't going to be waking up for a while. |
Jenny ![]() |
And back at the ARC about the same time, Jenny finally emerged from her office, looking at bit worn out from her marathon call with several members of the press. "Connor? Abby? Where's Cutter?" she asked as she walked down from the office level. "I dunno," Connor said looking over toward the HUB. "The two of them had been fiddling around at the HUB last I saw." "That was a while ago now," Abby said realizing what time it was and all. "Where the hell... " Jenny took out her phone to try and call and then stopped, seeing the message Cutter had sent her. "Oh, you have got to be kidding me, Cutter!" |
