A Small Alternative Bar, Manhattan, Sunday Evening

If he was completely honest with himself, Jack was still kind of tired after last night. So many people, actually responding to what they were doing, in an unfamiliar place full of unfamiliar people. It was insane to remember that they'd started--

Well, right here, in this bar, with about ten people shuffling up to the front eventually while they made their way through a smattering of metal greats, pop-punk hits and snarky pop covers played at double speed.

Tonight, there were more people - the bar was close to packed - and most of the music on the set list was their own. The clink of glasses, the smell of illicit cigarette smoke and sweat, the wild hair in the audience. It all felt familiar, in a way that hadn't always been safe but had definitely made it there now.

You'll never guess where we were yesterday. )

Tony's Mansion, New York, Saturday afternoon

Steve had two puppies in cones of shame skittering over wooden floors and an ice pack over one of his eyes as he flopped onto the sofa in Tony's massive mansion living room.

"Who sells the information about puppies getting spayed to Hydra?!" he demanded, his outrage still high despite this being at least the fifth time he'd asked the question.

Even so, your good nature and opinion matters to me.

It was odd, Liliana thought, lounging in her ridiculous bathtub, surrounded by lightly perfumed water and bubbles nearly up to her chin, how the most random sentences could affect you.

I would listen to your advice about breakfast.

Steven's words had been...well, not haunting her since the afternoon before. More like occasionally lurking underfoot, causing her to stumble over them when she least expected it.

A simple thing. )

Ugh, self-reflection was terrible. No wonder she rarely bothered. She downed her glass of wine and quickly poured herself another. And considered, hardly for the first time and certainly not the last, whether it might not just be better to cut her losses and run.

Honeymoon Lake Campground, Jasper, Alberta, Saturday Evening

The division of labour in their relationship- their marriage- meant that Steven typically handled the details regarding parties and get-togethers, while Watts handled those for holidays and getaways. Like this camping trip at Honeymoon Lake in Alberta.

They'd slept in that morning, catching the portal to the campground in the afternoon. After setting up the tent, they'd taken a walk to explore the grounds and then dipped into the lake for a swim.

With the sun setting, it was time for dinner: Just a simple dish of pasta with marinara sauce, prepared over the fire.

"I thought we could try something a little more involved tomorrow on one of the camp stoves," Watts said. "But for tonight, I figured this would do."

A Practice Space, Brooklyn, Saturday Noon

Another day, another show, this time upstate. Dane and Trent had gone on ahead earlier that morning to get to their rental. But a bunch of Jill's gear was still locked up at practice, never mind some of Dane's amps, and so it fell to the drummer and the singer to roll all of their stuff out onto the street while they waited for their ride to show up.

"I swear if short range portals weren't so expensive, I would never drive anywhere again a day in my life," Jack groused, as he attempted to peer over the edge of the kick drum, just to make sure he wasn't about to bowl someone over.

"Oh please," Jill said, as hauled two of her toms over her shoulder. "You're too much of a control freak. You're going to grab the wheel in that car as soon as it gets here and we'll have to wrench it back out of your hands when we get there."

"I could give that up for short range portals." Jack squatted down to set the kick drum down by the side of the road. He stretched up, tilting his head sideways in a desperate attempt to dispell the crick in his neck. "Maybe with some kind of speeder that actually goes up the stairs, so we don't keep having to do this."

And then we'll get a unicorn... )

Over Easy, Saturday

Raiden spent part of his Saturday morning explaining to the staff why they wouldn't be featuring pastry on the specials board too often. "I don't want to step on the bakery's toes. They've got their thing and they do it well. Besides, I'm not great at pastry. No one on staff is that great at pastry." It was almost like there was a great-at-pastry-shaped hole in the NPC staff that might be filled at some point in the distant future when his player got off her ass and worked through his canon until he met his soulmate who was coincidentally great at pastry. Weird.

Specials
Raspberry Oatmeal Pancakes
Nashville Hot Chicken Eggs Benedict
Catfish & Grits

"Partnering with the bakery to offer a pastry basket would be a great idea! You take point on that." See what happened when you had ideas? You got work.

What am I--I don't do this!

*chittering*

...they've handed me a note that says "any Steve will do." That's...well, that's kind of hurtful, fellas, I have to say. I'm definitely the better looking Steve.

*dubious sounding chittering*

Right, I'm taking that as agreement anyway. This is Steve McGarrett, apparently filling in for Cap, and here's the news or something like it.

In classes, we went to Detroit for square pizza, and unlike Steve Rogers or my partner from New Jersey, I do not think that's weird or a crime against pizza. It was really good! Even the brick cheese part. Finding New Hobbies learned crochet, and Liliana continued talking about Urza and how terrible he was.

*chittering*

And the library smelled like peanut butter. Sure.

In town, bad sleep was going around, with Watts and Steven talking about Watts' insomnia and how they hoped it won't affect the party today, and Liz at the Photo Hut also dragging a bit, but Prompto was there with energy-restoring salad. Luma was trying to fix her nails at Pixie Dust after a disastrous attempt at crochet. The Devil's Nest was leaning into their random shipment of mangos, and I am learning just now I missed out on mango mojitos, and now I'm sad.

*chittering*

Oh, I also missed out on empanadas with the Supper Club, and now I'm sad and hungry. Ask Henry, Harley, Flint, Ignis, or Lydia how they were.

*chittering*

Apparently they were squirrel-approved, so I don't know if that's a pro or a con. I'll leave you to decide that yourselves. Now how does this turn off--

Plant Parenthood; Friday [08/08].

With some of the supply whittled down a little bit due to Nell doing the flowers for the party later, Eleanor decided she was going to take some time to see if she could cleverly rearrange stuff to look more full...which should have just been a few adjustments and maybe switching out a few plants, but it very quickly turned into a whole project where she found herself on the edge of wanting to rearrange the whole place and had to remind herself that it wasn't her store to do that in and she should just go make herself some tea and read about the exciting world of herbs and spices before she got too carried away.

She just hoped the store remained quiet, so she didn't end up getting worn down by social interactions before she even left the place.

Drama in the Park-a-Rama [Friday, Period One]

There was an old fashion TV and VHS player on the stage this week. How had they gotten it? How had they converted new media to the old format? All valid questions!

Don't expect any answers.

"Well, it seems the gremlin has writers block and thinks watching this as a 'family' will help?" Jane ventured.

Answers were for suckers. "Don't be surprised if the script ends up looking very familiar," Cara added dryly.

"We did bring popcorn at least!" That was Jane. Thinking ahead.

Needful Things; Friday

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Harley knew about the party. She'd seen the posters around town the few times she'd actually gone outside in the past week or so. She'd even briefly considered pettily defacing at least one to say "SOME ARE WELCOME" but she hadn't happened to have a Sharpie or anything else useful on her at the time.

Anyway, she would not be attending, contain your shock. It would've been awkward enough when she had still been together with someone who would've been busy in a not-there sense the entire time, and now...

Well, now she would be finding something else to do with her evening. Harley didn't know what, yet, but it'd come to her! She was sure! And in the meantime, she was going to be in her still-empty store, trying to come up with new ideas for that. Granted, she didn't actually have any of those yet either, but they would come!! Just you watch!

But also, did you know that the classic grandma's house smell of thrifting and antiques could start feeling a lot less cozy and a lot more eugh if it was just an empty store still hanging onto it? Yeah, first things first: Harley was propping the store wide open to let some fresh air in.

Maybe it'd help her think. A gal could always hope, right?

The Beach Behind Midnight Manor, Friday afternoon through evening

The weather had turned out rather nice for a late day beach party, being not too hot or unforgivably sunny.

When guests arrived they would see that the area behind the boarding house had been set up with chairs, blankets, towels, baskets with bottles of sunscreen, and umbrellas for those who wanted to enjoy the sun and sand. Closer to the house were seats and picnic tables for mingling and eating. The doors to the building were open for anyone who needed to go inside to get away from the noise or simply enjoy some air conditioning.

The decorations were simple. White tablecloths and napkins. Two banners were hung above the food stations which read "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WATTS" and "MAZEL TOV, WATTS AND STEVEN" Beautiful displays of red roses, sunflowers, and the occasional honeysuckle courtesy of Nell could be found in centerpieces as well as garlands hung up about the space. A dance area was set up off to the side with white fairy lights (the electric kind, not actual fairies) lending atmosphere. Music came courtesy of the outdoor speakers Cal had installed.

Food was set up on various tables for guests to help themselves. Vegan and nonvegan options were available at all stations, with labels on everything to help those who had dietary restrictions or allergies. One table had cheeses, crackers, fruits, raw vegetables, quinoa cakes with tomatoes, olives, dips, and other nibbly things. Another had various salads such as fig and blackberry, black bean and corn, rice with seasonal vegetables, and of course garden salads of seasonal vegetables and dressings. Another was a setup of soft pretzels and fresh popcorn, also with various moddable toppings.

For the mains, there were burger and hot dog stations with various moddable types of burgers, dogs, buns, and toppings.

Dessert was a Pretzel Cake with "Happy Birthday, Watts" written across the top, along with assorted cupcakes, mini ice cream cones, grilled tropical fruit skewers, a s'mores station, and popsicle cocktails.

Drinks were various juices, water, sodas, beer, and wines that Watts had picked out with notes about which paired best with the various offered foods.

Steven was there, dressed in his linen suit from the wedding. Because if you couldn't wear your wedding suit to the party that was in part to celebrate your marriage, when could you? He was going to be fussing over every possible detail until guests arrived to distract him. Or his husband did. Possibly both.

Watts was also dressed in the suit he'd gotten married in, because see above reasoning. He was currently distracted from distracting Steven from fussing because he was too busy watching said fussing with charmed fondness.

[Open to any who want to celebrate a birthday, a wedding, or just enjoy a beach party!]

Luma had absolutely ruined her finger nail polish by attempting to make crochet easier by using her claws in class earlier, but obviously that was fine, because she could just redo them again here at work. It worked out even better, actually, because now she could pick out something to better match what she was planning on wearing to that party this weekend.

She wasn't sure she even knew the people holding it. One of them might have been in one of her classes? She'd figure it out later. First, she needed to figure out if she wanted to do solid colors, something matte or shiny, something glittery, or maybe some nice French ti--

Library, Thursday 8/7

Why did the library smell faintly of peanut butter today? Belle didn't know. Belle wasn't going to spend too much time investigating, either. She did a quick pass through the space looking for any signs of odd gremlin activity or abandoned indoor picnics or any other obvious reason why the smell of peanut butter lingered in the air.

There was no clear cause. That had Belle feeling a bit concerned but not overly so. A smell of peanut butter was a pleasant one at least and there was a package of peanut butter cups waiting for her on the desk. It was well sealed so not the source of the mysterious scent but it was certainly appreciated.

Finding (More) New Hobbies, Thursday Period 2

“Last week was TV and snacks,” Stark said. “Easy. Just something to sit back and enjoy without having to do anything at all besides maybe press a button. Or open snacks. So today we’ll do something that requires a little more effort. Or at least a little more engagement? I don’t know. A less passive hobby for today than the one last week, anyway.”

Was he babbling a little today? Maybe. Just a bit. These things happened, sometimes. Especially if you were Stark.

“So. Creating something. So there’s something to show for your time and something to keep your hands busy. But you don’t have to make it all up. Just follow the instructions. And if it doesn’t work you just take it apart and start again. So. This is…”

Stark paused and gestured to the bag in front of him and then started pulling things out of it. Hooks. Yarn. Instruction books. Kits for beginners that included everything.

“Crochet. Something new for us to try. Unless you’ve tried it before and then it isn’t new for you but it’s still new for me. So…Come get your supplies. And there is a video we can watch that might explain things and then there are plenty of instructions and different sorts of things to try. Hats are popular. Blankets, but that involves a lot more time than we have. Tiny scarves. Maybe a blanket for the squirrels when they’ve passed out? Or little characters and creatures. Lots of things to try but at first we’ll just try to put a few stitches together. And if you can’t…that’s fine. No risk. Just something to do. To keep us occupied.”

WTFH - Fandom Radio [Thurs, August 7th]

Well, it's a thinner stack of notes this week, I'd say that's a good sing, but I've been here too long.

In School news, Jaina was in charge of non-Anakin Shenanigans, inflicting another round of Hungry Hungry Hippos on the voluntolds, though apparently this time it involved less costumes and more free for alls.

No Dorm news, yet again, while over in Town, Needful Things was closed on account of everything getting bonfired. That's why you burn the other person's things, everyone.

Elsewhere, Jaina and Jag were enduring parenthood when Jaina turned into a kitty. Octavia was behind the bar at the Devil's Nest. While at Caritas, Summer was inflicting her very worst jello upon people as a farewell. I thankfully don't have any details in my notes beyond 'Teeth, why'. Those who were unlucky enough to witness all the gory details were Atton, Rey, Stark, and Raiden.
