MHA #16 - Friday Evening After Sunset

Cutter was still feeling a little restless from the other day and even though that stone had helped, he still couldn’t help but wonder about what it meant that he had been dreaming of Captain Ryan and then the last couple of days he had started dreaming of Stephen as well but it was Stephen before everything had happened with Helen, the Stephen he had happy memories of and that just made his restless energy grow.

After nervously pacing his flat for a bit to try and get rid of some of the restlessness that he was feeling, he decided to try and do something productive and after a while he thought maybe he should try and do some laundry, the pile had been growing steadily bigger since Rex had found Connor’s hoodie the other week. Maybe he should at least start organising the piles of laundry that he had.

As he bent down to start sorting through those piles of clothes, he thought he really did need to get more social … it was a Friday night and he was there doing laundry.

"Oh really? You and Connor? That's nice... I mean not the breaking up bit, but... glad you have someone around here keeping an eye on you at least" Bryan said with a fond smile. "He always seemed like a really good kid."

Cutter gave a smile at that, "yeah he is, we're still friends ...well still figuring out the friends part, which is better than where we were a month ago but it's nice still being able to hang out together," he said softly, "I've never been good at expressing my feelings ... but I'm working through it," he added.

"Seemed to be a common thread with us at the Home Office" Ryan said. "And let's just say that the military didn't really focus on 'getting in touch with your feelings' during training."

Cutter gave a small smile at that, "actually our current head of security, I've been talking to him a lot through all of this, trying to make sense of everything, he's become a bit of pseudo-counsellor," he stared down at his hands, "it's a shame the two of you never got to meet, I think you would have been really good friends - his names Captain Becker,"

"Well if he's doing good by you and Connor then he gets a passing vote from me" Ryan said. "Sounds like the team is still going strong, which is good. But how is Lester doing? Still as much a stuff shirt pencil pusher as he was before?" Ryan asked as he tried not to laugh a bit thinking about the times they had poked at Lester behind his back.

"Actually if you can believe it he's mellowed out a bit," Cutter said softly with a grin, "even let Connor and me stay at his play for a couple of weeks while we recovered, I mean ... he can still be a bit of a stuff shirt but I think we've grown on him, he'll never admit that though,"

"Well I'll be, miracles do happen" Ryan said with a laugh. "I'd say the old man the best from me but... would probably break his little mind, all this. Hell, I don't even understand this myself to be honest." Ryan looked over at Cutter and smiled. "But I am thankful for it all the same. I... I had been worried what was going to happen to you... and the team...if I.. ya know."

"You know I'm almost tempted to say that to Lester even though he would probably sanction me if I did," Cutter gave a small smile at that and then his smile softened, "you're greatly missed Captain," he said softly, "we couldn't have gotten as far as we did without you there supporting us," he paused, "and I'm sorry for all those times that I gave you hell for doing your job, James should really have given you a pay rise," he said sheepishly.

"Yes, yes he did" Ryan agreed with a grin of his own. "And you were a bit of a handful I will admit... having to half drag your sorry arse back through anomalies and trying to keep your team from becoming dino chow."

Cutter smiled at that, "yeah that part hasn't changed too much I'm afraid, I still have a tendency to leap before I look, I still get into quite a bit of trouble as Captain Becker is now finding out," he admitted a bit sheepishly.

"Well, maybe if there is a round two down the road for these visits, maybe I will have the pleasure of meeting this Captain Becker" Ryan said as he finished his beer. "Trade horrors stories about the team, give him some pointers..." Ryan gave Cutter a small wink to let him know he was joking.

"He'll have a few horror stories to tell you alright," Cutter said, knowing that Ryan was joking but he felt sad that the two were likely never going to meet ... even though he couldn't help but wonder if Ryan hadn't died, would he have me Captain Becker?

He couldn't go down that road and he shook his head as he finished the last of his beer, "I kicked him the first time we met," he admitted.

Ryan gave a small snort laugh at that. "coming from the guy who tried to intentionally strand himself behind an anomaly... yeah, that checked out." Sorry Cutter, you have given Ryan a run for his money on several occasions. The least you owed him was a couple of cheap shots.

Cutter laughed at that, "I mean in hindsight yes that was a pretty stupid move of me, especially because I was trying to find Helen ..." he shook his head, "I'm surprised you didn't end up knocking me out more often with some of the stunts I pulled,"

Yes Ryan deserved as many cheap shots as he could get in for putting up with Cutter.

"Well, I've never been married but.... I would like to think if I found out my wife was actually alive when I thought she was dead... I'd like to think I would be trying to find her" he looked at Cutter and gave a small wink. "Just not sure stranding myself a million years in the past would have been my approach."

Cutter gave a small smile at that, "not one of my smartest moments that was for sure," he said and then was quiet for a moment, "thank you for bringing me back though, I know how difficult I was being at that point ... I am grateful you brought me back," he told him.

"Just doing my job. And besides, you were already starting to grow on me by that point for some reason" Ryan said with a smirk. "Which is also why.... I think we need to mark this little impromptu visit with a proper meal!"

Cutter grinned at that, “well I’ve been told I do grow on people,” he said and then tilted his head, “a proper meal? That does sound nice,” he admitted.

"So, I think... if you can point me in the right direction... I'll grab some stuff and whip up a nice meal for us to celebrate this weekend. Have any requests? I actually have a pretty extensive repertoire of dishes." Yes Ryan was full of surprises.

“Maybe you can surprise me?” Cutter said with a smile, “I never pictured you for being a cook,” he admitted, admittedly there wasn’t a lot about Ryan he had known outside of the Home Office, “uh …you might have to do a lot of food shopping, I don’t have a lot of food,” he admitted.

"One surprise meal coming up" Ryan said as he grabbed a piece of paper and pen off the nearby table and started jotting down the things he would need. "Guess one of the good things about a place like this- not a far walk from one place to another. Because lord help anyone that tried to navigate all these stairs other than on foot!" Ryan laughed and finished his list and held onto it as he looked back at Cutter, and fiddled with it a bit, almost nervously. "Hopefully won't take me too long to get the stuff."

Cutter smiled at that, "it does take some getting used to, all those stairs," he agreed, "and Turtle & Canary should have everything you need, it usually has a wide selection of different options," he told Ryan, "so you should only need to go to the one store,"

Ryan nodded and gave a small salute to Cutter and smiled. "Yes sir! I'll be back with enough stuff to make a meal to feed an army. Gotta make sure you eat once I am gone after all" he added with a smirk as he headed for the door.
